Rate of immigration ’set to rise’

The number of people migrating to the UK each year will be 45,000 more than previously predicted, figures suggest. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) had estimated that the net increase in population due to migration would be 145,000 a year. for more click here

‘Jena 6′ teen freed on bail

A black teenager jailed in the racially combustible “Jena Six” case was released Thursday, hours after the prosecutor announced that he would no longer seek to try him as an adult.

Mychal Bell, 17, had spent nearly 10 months behind bars after he and five other black youths allegedly assaulted a white classmate last year at Jena High School in Louisiana. for more click here

Burma seals off key monasteries

Italy: Deportation Order Puts Tunisian at Risk of Torture
Tunisia’s Promises of Humane Treatment Cannot Be Trusted

(New York, September 26, 2007) – The Italian government should halt its
efforts to deport a national security suspect back to Tunisia, where he
faces the risk of torture and abuse despite the Tunisian government’s
unreliable promises of humane treatment, Human Rights Watch said today
in a letter to the Italian government.

NHS funding

The independent body charged with reviewing NHS Health Board funding has submitted its final report to the Scottish Government.

Ministers will now consider the detailed recommendations of the NHS Scotland Resource Allocation Committee (NRAC) within the context of the forthcoming Spending Review.

Scottish Crime Survey 2006

Mugabe blasts US human rights record

[JURIST] Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe [BBC profile] devoted much of his address [PDF statement] to the 62nd UN General Assembly on Wednesday to attacking the human rights record of US President George W. Bush. Mugabe was responding to Bush’s address [PDF text], where Bush called Mugabe’s government a “tyrannical regime” that has “cracked down on peaceful calls for reform, and forced millions to flee their homeland.” Mugabe in turn accused Bush of human rights abuses in Iraq and Afghanistan, and of torturing prisoners in Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in secret prisons in Europe [JURIST news archives]. for more click here

Edinburgh Airport rail improvements

Proposals for an alternative to the previous Edinburgh Airport Rail Link (EARL) project were today set out by the Scottish Government.

Speaking at the Parliament today, Mr Stevenson vowed to provide good public transport access to Edinburgh Airport in order to encourage fewer people to drive there. He also stated that the proposals will be delivered for a fraction of the cost of EARL project and without high risk.
