It’s rarely been more expensive to be an American abroad.A dollar will now buy you less than 50p in Britain, and it’s at an all-time low in the eurozone.
That’s certainly bad news for Americans who are traveling, and for those poor benighted UK-based American investment bankers whose bonuses apparently are calculated in dollars. As Hamish McRae put it in the Independent on Sunday, the ‘poor dears’.
But it’s not just itinerant Americans who should fear the weak dollar…

Parliamentarians from Commonwealth nations and regions ranging from Norfolk Island to the Punjab will debate ways to strengthen parliamentary democracy in the Commonwealth, at an event at the Scottish Parliament this week. Thirty-four parliamentarians will take part in the 19th Commonwealth Parliamentary Seminar, which runs from Monday 29 October until Friday 2 November. news that he is to boycott the state visit of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
He wrote to the Saudi ambassador explaining his decision:
“I have introduced three debates in Parliament this year expressing serious
concerns over the al-Yamamah contract and the corruption allegedly involved. I
have, in my arguments, also been very critical of members of the Saudi royal
family and the Saudi record on human rights, including its maltreatment of
British citizens.”
