Giant Antarctic ice shelf breaks into the sea

A vast hunk of floating ice has broken away from the Antarctic peninsula, threatening the collapse of a much larger ice shelf behind it, in a development that has shocked climate scientists.

Satellite images show that about 160 square miles of the Wilkins ice shelf has been lost since the end of February, leaving the ice interior now “hanging by a thread”. for more click here

‘Ontario residents only’ at Tent City

Dozens of Ontario police and code enforcement officers descended upon the homeless encampment known as Tent City early Monday, separating those who could stay from those to be evicted.

Large, often confused, crowds formed ragged lines behind police barricades where officers handed out color-coded wristbands. Blue meant they were from Ontario and could remain. Orange indicated they had to provide more proof to avoid ejection, and white meant they had a week to leave. for more click here

Climate change may spark conflict with Russia, EU told

European governments have been told to plan for an era of conflict over energy resources, with global warming likely to trigger a dangerous contest between Russia and the west for the vast mineral riches of the Arctic.

A report from the EU’s top two foreign policy officials to the 27 heads of government gathering in Brussels for a summit this week warns that “significant potential conflicts” are likely in the decades ahead as a result of “intensified competition over access to, and control over, energy resources”. for more click here

WHITE students are fleeing public schools, leaving behind those of Aboriginal and Middle Eastern origin, a secret report by high school principals reveals.

The NSW Secondary Principals Council conducted a confidential survey which raises serious concerns about “white flight” undermining the public education system and threatening social cohesion. Some teachers and principals have described it as “de facto apartheid”. for more click here

A MASSIVE £850 million revamp of the eyesore St James Centre was unveiled for the first time today in what is set to become the biggest city centre development for decades.

Flood-hit UK braced for more rain

More rain is set to hit Britain following a day in which torrential downpours brought chaos to parts of the country.

Dozens of homes and businesses were left underwater after heavy showers drenched the north of England and Wales. The Environment Agency has 14 severe flood warnings still in place, along with more than a hundred standard warnings. for more click here

So we’re a week into the new year, and already two teenagers have been murdered - most recently Faridon Alizada, 18, found stabbed to death in a block of flats that, according to those living nearby, should have been demolished years ago. Double-digit rise in Npower bills

Energy firm Npower has announced that electricity prices for its domestic customers will rise by 12.7%, while gas bills will see a 17.2% increase. Npower, the UK’s fourth-largest energy provider, said it had been “forced to put up prices” because of soaring wholesale energy costs. for more click here

It’s been a funny old meteorological year

The outstanding feature of this year’s weather was undoubtedly the devastating summer floods. But there was plenty of other weird weather across the UK.New year came in with a bang in Torbay, Devon, as a great big ball of light dropped out of the sky and exploded — a possible case of ball lightning.
