Spain May Grant Human Rights to Apes

The Spanish newspaper El Mundo (25 April) reports that Spain’s governing Socialists are submitting a bill to grant human rights to four species of animals. The species are chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orang-utans: the so-called ‘great apes’ or ‘pongids’ (grandes simios in Spanish).

The purpose of the bill is to ensure that Spain adheres to the international Great Ape Project, granting the animals the right to life, freedom and not being tortured. The GAP motto is: “Equality beyond humanity”. Its declaration says: “We demand the extension of the community of equals to include all great apes: human beings, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orang-utans.” for more click here

You don’t often get a laugh out of central bankers, but last night’s Federal Reserve statement was a cracker.

Fed chief Ben Bernanke said he was a bit worried about inflation.

Pull the other one, Ben. The only part of the Fed that’s actually remotely worried about inflation is the single member of the ten-strong rate-setting committee who actually voted for a rate hike last night.

Because the truth is that by leaving rates on hold last night, the Fed actually cut them…

Nuclear missiles could blow up ‘like popcorn’

A design flaw in Britain’s nuclear arsenal means that warheads could set off a chain reaction “like popcorn” if they were accidentally dropped, according to Ministry of Defence documents.
